If you are in the market for a new host agency or questioning the viability of your own host, here are a few ideas to help with your research and decision-making. Believe it or not, finding the host who will pay the highest commission or charge the lowest (or no) fees is not your best option. You want to find a reputable, reliable business partner. Here’s how to determine a host’s financial stability:
1. Check the Better Business Bureau rating of the host - if there are complaints about the host, that's one place they would be.
2. Google the host to see what comes up - again, if there are problems, it will be all over the Internet.
3. Ask for agent references.
4. Call the Attorney General’s office in the state(s) in which they are registered to see if there are any complaints filed against them. Many states have laws that require travel companies to register and pay annual fees. California, Florida, Washington, to name a few.
5. Go on home based agent bulletin boards such as www.HBTACommunity.com and post a message.
6. If the company is publicly held, you can check their financials online.
7. Ask supplier sales reps who are in their territory.
Generally, if there are issues with a host, it's not a secret. Red flags for agents will be slow or no pay commissions, noticeable changes in service levels from the host, lack of callbacks, they stop answering their phones, aren't responsive, etc.
